Synopsis

An epic romantic adventure that will transport you to another world, a spellbinding story about love and hate, honor and evil, hope and justice set against the exotic backdrop of the teeming Amazon rain forest.

After the death of his wife and twin sons, Army vet Ian Slaney is a shadow of his former self. On the path of self-destruction, only his best friend’s disappearance in South America pulls Ian back from the ledge. He rushes to Brazil, only to discover that his friend was murdered. The single lead in the case is also the single biggest obstacle–Daniela, a mysterious beauty very much in need of protection, with a host of secrets hidden in a dark past. As the two of them track down clues and try to untangle an impossible case, they draw the attention of all the wrong people, and danger follows them back to the US.

Ian wants the murderers. Daniela wants Ian to acknowledge the hot sparks of passion between them. But convincing Ian to set aside his protective instincts proves more difficult than turning an anaconda vegetarian.

Awesome suspense, epic romance, thrilling adventure!

I really am not sure where to even start with this review… I’ve been reading books by Dana Marton for a while now and I’ve loved all of them. Her book, Flash Fire, won the prestigious RITA award this summer. I thought her writing couldn’t get any better – I was wrong.  Girl in the Water is one of the most nail-biting, thrilling, suspenseful and complex stories that I think I have ever read. I have to admit that I normally read lighter-weight stories and don’t often read ones that run to 300 pages, but if Dana writes it, I’ll read it. She even got me to try something totally new when she wrote a fantasy series called Hardstorm Saga (I loved it). OK, back to Girl in the Water.

I have a confession; I had a bit of a hard time getting into this story and that doesn’t happen often to me with books by an author I love. So, I have to think that a good bit of the reason for it, if not all, is because I wasn’t expecting the storyline to be quite as complex as it was. As I said earlier most of my reading has been very light weight lately. I am SO GLAD that I kept reading.

The thing that I found very compelling about this book was the fact that there are really 3 different but connected stories being told. One is about young Daniela and Ian who saves her. Another is about a young couple, Carmen and Phil. (They have a connection to Daniela but you have to read the book to find out how.) And one is about the grown up Daniela, her relationship with Ian and the kidnapping they must solve.

Dana’s descriptive writing is impeccable. I could see and feel and smell the jungle all around me as I read; I was totally transported into the captivating story she wove with her wonderful words. As heart-pounding and suspenseful as the story was, Dana also managed to inject a bit of humor into it. There was one very memorable scene involving Daniela and a monkey.

The path to the HEA in romance is never easy in a great story but my heart broke for Daniela more than once; she so deserved to get her HEA.

I can’t recommend this book enough. If you love a complex, nail-biting thriller and an epic romance that spans several years you don’t want to miss this story!
