Synopsis

Who’s been sleeping in the Alpha’s bed?

Exiled from his pack by his father, Brice Walker has secretly come home to visit his ailing grandmother only to discover a human and very desirable female sleeping in his bed. Their attraction is instant. But his new bed buddy seems determined to resist his Southern charm and Alpha allure.

For Brice, fiercely independent Cassie not only represents a chance to build a new life in Walker’s Run but is also his one true mate. Cassie’s reluctance dissolves when a rogue shifter kidnaps her, and now she and Brice must work together to save his pack. But once she witnesses the savagery of wolfan justice, can Cassie accept Brice as man, beast and her true love?

A few words from the author

I asked Kristal about how much input an author has in publishing decisions such as title, cover and recording rights. This is her response.

Hi Jean.
Thanks for the opportunity to chat about the publishing process for my debut paranormal romance, AWAKENED BY THE WOLF.

Originally, this story was titled HOWLIN’ HEARTS. The manuscript finaled in several contests, including RWA’s Golden Heart contest in 2015 where it caught the attention of Harlequin Nocturne’s senior editor. After I contracted the manuscript, my editor did request a change in title. She felt HOWLIN’ HEARTS was too light-hearted and the story’s tone is definitely dark. I’d always heard that traditional publishers generally required a title change so I wasn’t surprised by my editor’s request. I was, however, delighted that she asked me for alternative titles, rather than saying the publisher would come up with one. To make sure I hit the mark with their expectations, I researched Nocturne’s titles for ideas. Since the opening of the story is the hero mistakenly barging into the heroine’s rooms, AWAKENED BY THE WOLF seemed appropriate.

While I didn’t have direct input into the cover art, I gave the art department detailed descriptions of the hero and heroine, as well as three pivotal scenes from the story. They drew inspiration from the title and incorporate key elements from the scenes in a way I couldn’t have imagined. They really captured the essence of the story and some of the finer details were unexpected, such as the scars on the hero’s throat.

I’m looking forward to repeating the collaborative process. Book two has been turned in and I’ve started completing the details for the art department. I’m also working on book three. At the start, I envisioned The Wahyas of Walker’s Run series as a trilogy, but as each book introduces new secondary characters the plot bunnies begin to multiply. As long as they do, more stories will follow.

A definite page turner!

I love a good paranormal romance with elements of mystery and suspense. Awakened by the Wolf offers an unresolved murder from the hero’s past and plenty of action as an old enemy rears his head in a bid to take over the pack’s territory. The enemy is a mystery as well as his machinations. But as this homecoming and romance unravel so too does the truths of the past.

Years ago, Brice Walker and his brother were set upon. His older brother, the alpha in waiting was killed and Brice spent ages in a coma recovering. The guilt riding him is deep and he lives under the misguided assumption that he has been banned from his pack. When his grandmother takes ill Brice sneaks back onto the pack compound to see her. What he finds though is a human occupying his bedroom. The sparks fly from the moment they meet and destiny is set in motion.

Cassie has been fighting the legacy of being the daughter of a trailer trash drunk for years. Slowly but surely she’s worked her way up and out after burying her mom a couple years back. Having worked for Brice’s grandmother as a housekeeper since her early teens she moved in when the trailer park was condemned and she lost the only home she had. Now she works for the family resort while putting herself through college. With granny’s hospitalization, her housing situation is in jeopardy once again. That is unless she can come to some kind of arrangement with Brice.

Negotiating with his reluctant mate is definitely a challenge for Brice. Keeping Cassie safe while he attempts to charm his way into his own bed might just prove even more of a challenge. The past has come calling in a very threatening way. Not only is his pack threatened but his mate as well. Awakened by the Wolf has its emotional roller coaster moments including plenty of humor, loving, frustration, anger, grieving and fear. So if you like a good romance that can stir things up along the way to HEA this is one paranormal that fills the bill… a definite page turner.

Excerpt

“Do you ever keep that thing covered?” The huskiness in Cassie’s voice caused his thing to twitch.

“You like seeing me naked. I can see it in your eyes.” Securing the towel around his hips, Brice padded barefoot across the cold tile.

“What you see is my brain being fried from too much exposure to all your glory.”

“You think I’m glorious?” Brice unfastened her silver hair clip. Red ringlets splashed over his hands and slid through his fingers. He held fast to one curl and stroked the luxurious strands across his cheek. A thrill zipped straight down to his groin.

“That’s not what I meant.” A slight tremble parted her lips.

Brice ached for a kiss and so much more. Her taste on his tongue, her scent on his skin, her luscious legs wrapped around his hips. A deluge of erotic dreams had eroded his resolution to keep things platonic.

Cassie’s scent wove a spell of need and want that smothered reason. Helpless to resist, he slipped his arm around her waist and lowered his face to hers. She squinted and puckered her mouth, but not to receive his lips.

The unexpected rejection jolted Brice. “What’s wrong?”

“I don’t want this.” She gestured a between-you-and-me hand signal. “I have plans for the future and you’re not in them.”

Damn. That stung.

Even though he agreed they had no future together, he disliked hearing her say it.

“You need ground rules.” Cassie wormed out of his hold and faced him with a straight back, squared shoulders and both hands on her hips.
Her eyes slanted with censure. She pointed her jaw and scrunched her mouth like his fourth-grade teacher when he’d neglected to do his homework three days in a row. When he’d been a wolfling, the no-nonsense, better-get-your-shit-together look had mortified him into compliance. Now that he was an adult male in his prime, that look on a feisty, petite human female did something entirely different.

“I don’t like rules.” He smiled.
