Trilling and Suspenseful!
I have been hearing so many good things about this book and series since it came out as an audiobook. When the opportunity to review this one came up, I hopped on it. Gary Furlong has long been on my list of favorite audiobook performers and boy did he knock this one out of the park. The story is full of emotional scenes and those emotions came through loud and clear due to Gary’s excellent performance. The audiobook is very deserving of its nomination in the thriller category for a SOVAS (Society of Voice Arts and Sciences) award (https://www.sovas.org/2021-nominees/).
This is the first book I’ve read by John Wiltshire and I was absolutely glued to my headphones once I started listening to this and I only stopped, briefly, when real life intervened. I need to let you know that this story does have a bit of a cliffhanger. The series is 8 books long but I’m not sure if it takes that long for the cliffhanger from book one to be resolved. In any case, I knew going in that everything wouldn’t be wrapped up in the first book and I was fine with that. Cliffhangers only bother me when I don’t know one is coming. Even if I’m not able to listen to the remaining books in this series I will never be sorry that I listened to this one.
The story kept me on the edge of my seat for a lot of it. There were twists and turns I never saw coming and there are a lot of hot AF 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 sexy scenes; I thought my headphones were going to melt in a couple of places. 😊 Sir Nikolas Mikkelsen is Ben Rider’s boss but their affair isn’t all that it seems to be. Nik is married and at the beginning of the story I was shaking my head about him cheating on his wife. You’ll have to read it for yourself to find out why this isn’t a “cheating” situation; it’s something I didn’t see coming.
If you are at all squeamish be warned that there is a fair amount of violence and some of it is fairly graphic. The story got a bit confusing for me towards the end as there is a lot going on but I plan to relisten to it soon – something I almost never do because my TBR/TBL lists are way too long.
I can’t say enough good things about this book; it really is one of the best audiobooks I’ve listened to this year.

GLBTQ RomanceJake watched the tic jump under Mitch’s left eye, a sure sign he was angry. “You know the risks. Why are you being so damn stupid?” “He stole everything from me,” Jake said. “He’s not having my bar, too.” The tic jumped uncontrollably for a few seconds. “He didn’t steal me… us. You were the one who threw that away.”
