The diagnosis of a chronic stomach condition leaves thirty-two-year-old Sergeant Jed Cooper with little choice but to call time on his Army career. Then on the dusty streets of Kirkuk, an ambush gone tragically wrong decimates his team, and he returns to the US with a shattered leg and the memory of his best friend dying in his arms.
Life in his sleepy hometown proves intolerable until he finds solace in a lakeside cabin with vivacious young carpenter, Max O’Dair. In the shadow of the epilepsy that periodically plagues Max, he and Jed form an unspoken bond. After a late night episode, Jed realizes how much Max means to him, and life has taught him not to waste time.
But the lines between contentment and complacency are blurred. Things left hidden resurface to tear through their world, and before they can repair the damage, death comes to call again. Faces, past and present, rally around them to weather the storm, but before long, they are left with only love.

Gut wrenching, but in a good way by the end.
I haven’t read a lot of books by Garrett Leigh but I have enjoyed those that I have and Only Love is no exception. This book is pretty angsty but I don’t mind that type of story at all.
Read the blurb – it’s great and tells you about the book better than I can. What I can tell you is that this is a very intense story; no light and fluffy here. The things that Jed has seen and done during his Army career shouldn’t happen to anyone. The incurable, debilitating stomach illness contracted from a virus, makes him suffer something awful and his injured leg doesn’t help matters either.
Max O’Dair has epilepsy but he tries not to let it rule his life. After he rents his spare bedroom to Jed, as a favor to his sister, he can’t help but feel drawn to him. If only the two of them would learn to communicate better with each other.
Only Love is also about family and family relationships both good and bad. Max’s sister Kim is married to Jed’s brother Nick and Nick doesn’t really get along with anyone very well. There are a couple of very charming girls in the family, Nick and Kim’s children, and their uncles both dote on them.
The author hasn’t put any warnings on the book, and I don’t always think they are necessary, but I’d like to mention that there are some fairly graphic war scenes depicted in this story as well as time spent in hospitals.
