Synopsis

Recently traded to the newly formed Vermont Trailblazers, professional hockey player Roman Kinsey needs to focus on helping the team win games and filling the stands, not on the blond, bespectacled part-timer who works at the library he volunteers at. He knows all too well that outing himself equals heartache and ridicule…or worse.

Cody Evans, psych major and grad school hopeful, notices everything and thinks too much. But he doesn’t know what to think when he sees Roman reading to kids. The rugged hockey player just doesn’t look like the type. But it stirs something in him, something he’s never felt before.

When the library is threatened with closure, Cody enlists Roman’s help. As they get to know each other better…much, much better…they realize that they have more in common than books. But Roman’s keeping a big part of himself from his team, and giving in to his feelings for Cody might be more than he’s willing to risk.

Fantastic!

I have loved this series so much and Shots on Goal is a fantastic addition. In my review of book two, The Nature of the Game, I said I hoped that Kinsey would get a book. He does and Shots on Goal is it. You don’t need to have read the previous books to enjoy Shots on Goal but you’d be missing two wonderful stories if you don’t read them (book 2 is on sale for 99 cents until January 13, 2020).

Shots on Goal takes place in 2011, towards the end of the timeline of The Nature of the Game. Roman Kinsey has been traded from Tampa’s NHL team to the new Vermont Trailblazers. Kinsey is not out to his team because when he was outed several years ago, he lost everything and he doesn’t want that to ever happen again. When he meets Cody Evans at the library where he volunteers, he starts to rethink that and has to decide if Cody is worth risking everything.

Like the first two books, this story really wowed me. It made me feel things deeply. I felt so bad for what happened to Roman when he was young and got outed. While his character was a jerk in The Nature of the Game he is totally redeemed in this book. We find out what caused him to be such a jerk and how those events shaped the person he is.

Cody is demisexual (he isn’t easily—or often—sexually attracted to others) but he can appreciate how good looking Roman is. As they grow closer while working together, Cody realizes that he’s falling for Roman.

Cody and Roman have a lot of things to work out between them if their relationship is to succeed. There are a few angsty moments but overall this book just made me feel the love between Cody and Roman. I also loved catching up with the other two couples from the previous books.

I don’t know if this is the last book in the series or not. If it is, I’m really sorry to see it end. However, I’ve loved all of Amy’s books so far and look forward to many more happy hours of reading whatever she writes next.

Excerpt

Roman gave him a little pat on the butt. “Okay, up. I’m not having sex on a couch my ass will stick to.”Cody rose with a little hop and Roman followed suit. “Oh, look.” Cody’s warm hands landed on Roman’s chest. “One of us is already half-naked. How fortuitous.”

Laughing, Roman towed Cody into the bedroom. The last time he’d laughed this much with someone before a sexual encounter was never. He did sex, not emotional attachment.

Except this time. Because Cody was worth being vulnerable for.

“Still want those cookies?” Roman asked, walking backward into the bedroom.

Walking right into him, Cody said, “Maybe not right this second,” and kissed him stupid.

And stupid was exactly what he became as they undressed, as they made out on top of the covers, as Cody removed his glasses and set them on the night table with a muttered, “I’m so hot they’re fogging up,” making Roman downright fucking giggle around Cody’s nipple. And stupid was what he called himself when they were both sweating and panting and swearing and he realized he’d forgotten lube and a condom.

“Don’t go anywhere.”

“As if I could.” Cody was sprawled on the bed, erection in one fist, jerking himself off slowly. “I’ll just blink unseeing at the ceiling.”

“Can you not see it?” Roman dug in his bathroom drawers, his own erection bobbing in front of him.

“I can see it. It’s just really blurry. You’re blurry.” Cody waved a hand at him when he stepped out of the bathroom. “You don’t have any features. You could be looking past me at the window and I wouldn’t know it.”

“Really? So you can’t see me do this?” Standing at the foot of the bed, lube and condom in one hand, Roman dragged the other over his own hip, his stomach, lower to the dark patch of hair.

Cody squinted so hard his eyes went to slits, and then they popped wide and he beckoned with one finger. “Bring that over here.”
