Synopsis

Jack and Eli have been separated for months while Jack gathers intelligence in Philadelphia and Eli spies on British officers in New York. When Jack has to take on the role of spymaster and work behind-the-scenes, Eli offers to insinuate himself in Philadelphia’s loyalist circles, taking Jack’s place.

As Eli works to uncover traitorous negotiations between a high-ranking American officer and the British, he cozies up to British spymaster John Andre. Jack doesn’t like Eli putting himself at risk, nor does he like seeing him fawning over a beautiful, charming man.

As the chances of the American army surviving the winter decline, tensions mount between Jack and Eli, threatening to tear them apart. They will have to rely on their love and trust for one another to make it through these harrowing months.

I loved reading more about Jack and Eli!

Of Hope and Anguish is the second book in the Revolutionaries series. You might be able to read this as a standalone but I highly recommend reading book one, Revolutionary Temptation, so that you get all of the history between Jack and Eli.

Book one ended with a very satisfactory HFN (happy for now) and book two picks up soon after. Jack, Eli, and *Constance are still spying on the British and everyone is wishing for the war to end soon.

Jack and Eli’s relationship is tested when a handsome British soldier, Captain Andre, is introduced and Eli must get close to him in order to find out what he’s planning.

Of Hope and Anguish kept me on the edge of my seat throughout the book. Like the title implies, there’s a fair amount of angst between Jack and Eli but there’s also a lot of intrigue as Jack, Eli and *Constance work together to see that the British are defeated. I really enjoy a well written historical M/M romance story and Silvia Violet did a great job with this one.

Of Hope and Anguish, like Revolutionary Temptation, ends with a HFN, but I think this one definitely gives this impression that there will be more books coming; for one, the war has not yet ended. I would love to read more about the adventures of Jack, Eli and *Constance.

*Note: this is definitely an M/M story but the character of Constance plays a very integral part as she is spy that started everything. There is no sexual relationship between Jack, Eli and Constance.
