Series: The Supernatural London Underground, Book # 1

Synopsis

Unable to contain the deadly nature of her family secret and powers, nine-teen year old Romarin Demetri hails from California, U.S.A, to unearth her heritage as a descendant of serial-killer, Countess Bathory, the woman that lent Dracula his legend, and cursed Romarin with an appetite for blood.

Unenthusiastic about relocating to her birth city of London, a charming paranormal investigator with claim to the throne could change her mind, as he leads her to the only living and distant relative she has: a raven-haired recluse named Talia, who has taken refuge in an old castle in the heart of the city, and doesn’t seem to have a heart of her own.

After a rough introduction to the lethal, inappropriate, and enchantingly sarcastic people she calls her housemates, perhaps the other misfits will be her first true friends; However, as much as these people are like her, they still have hidden vendettas, a taste for revenge, and will struggle between what is just, and what will settle their psychological upheaval. There is only one way for Romarin to become part of the Supernatural London Underground: Can she be the one who challenges them to put down their ghosts and demons and make their world together?

Who and what is Romarin?

I want to start this review by saying that this genre, while paranormal, isn’t my typical read because of the lack of romance elements. With that said, I would have to say that enough about this story intrigued me and left me curious to find out more about this world Ms. Demetri created.

Waking up in a mental institution is hard enough; add a man in your head that isn’t you and a body of a girl that you don’t recognize that is both gorgeous and haunting, and you have the start of this mysterious paranormal novel. Romarin learns bits and pieces about herself, meeting many others similar to herself along the way to discover secrets about who she is. Because Romarin doesn’t remember who she is—or what. All she knows is that she craves blood, and when she drinks blood from a fresh source, like the man in her head, she obtains their personality and voice.

A Mirror Among Shattered Glass is an unraveling mystery of many different characters that suffer one way or another from afflictions, much like Romarin. With not much to guide or help her, Romarin is pretty much left to pick up the pieces of her scattered memory and past.

This story is a very slow start and takes a bit to get into. It follows several different POVs throughout that allow the reader to get intimate details about the other characters surrounding her. However, once some of the prized characters are met and dialogued, you start to enjoy the short, sassy banter and intriguing history behind Romarin and her companions. The writing was descriptive and quite easy to follow, and I can say that though it wouldn’t be my first choice of novel to read, this book offers an intriguing take on true history.

Overall, I think this book is a good debut for Ms. Demetri, and I’m hopeful for what book two will bring.
