Numbers is the 14th and 15th stories in the New Species series. I have to tell you I wasn’t happy to discover I missed this one when it first came out. New Species is one of my favorite series and all of Ms. Dohner’s books are a solid 5-stars in my book… Numbers is no exception. Ms. Dohner’s books while character driven also espouse excellent world building, an ongoing series arc I love, and some of the best and the worst displays of humanity. The irony in that is that the very best of humanity is seen in the new species a group of ruthless scientists have created. If you are at all familiar with Lora Leigh’s Breed series you will notice some similarities, in general, themes. Both series are excellent and stand on their own merits.

This particular book contains two novellas. The first, 140 is the tale of two grieving individuals. Both have lost their spouse/mate. But how they choose to deal with their loss is very different. While Dana has had her bouts of major depression and wished on occasion that she did not survive her husband, she has learned to cope and is actively working the grieving process. She has discovered her reason to move on in life. Mourn, on the other hand, seeks his death by starting fights with the most dangerous of the new species. It’s after one such fight that Dana meets Mourn in the clinic in which her brother works. When she finds out what is motivating his actions, Dana offers to talk with Mourn. What ensues is a clumsy seduction when Mourn realizes that perhaps Dana offers much more for his recovery than just talk. For the first time, he is interested in living again… with Dana as his mate. While their story is poignant it is also full of humor, erotic discovery and a growing love that will see them through a lifetime.

The second novella, 927 was definitely unique for this series. While Candi is most definitely human, she wasn’t raised a human. At the age of five, Candi witnessed the murder of her mother and neighbor… by her father, one of the scientists for Mercile. In order to save his own neck, her father placed her in the cages with a young new species wolf breed. Together Candi and 927 survived the harsh realities of captivity into their teen years. Then everything fell apart. Both were led to believe the other had perished. Candi spent the rest of her captivity housed in a mental institute. 927 was eventually freed with the rest of the New Species. Now having escaped, Candi is out for revenge for those who took 927 from her. Imagine her surprise and his, when they discover they are both very much alive. Their reunion, however, isn’t all peaches and creme. While Candi wants nothing but to be with 927 or Hero as he is now known, he, on the other hand, isn’t quite ready to handle the situation. So what’s a gal to do with a reluctant mate? Why seduce him of course!

Ms. Dohner has once again delivered on two very character driven novellas that are sure to please. I don’t know what the future will bring for the New Species series, but I certainly hope Ms. Dohner continues to pen these wonderful stories. If you are looking for a paranormal romance with a basis in sci-fi and a hearty dose of the erotic then the New Species series definitely delivers.
