Tissues required!
She had some support, but they were looking for the woman she’d once been, not understanding that person would never exist again. Misfortune left a mark on you. It split your soul into pieces, and once you put yourself back together, you found yourself permanently altered.
Before a tornado ripped her life apart Estelle was happily married to the love of her life and expecting her first child, a child she’d spent years trying to conceive. Then her life became a media frenzy as others fed on her misfortune to fuel their need for sensationalism. Her friends and acquaintances cashed in on the frenzy. Now the number of those she keeps close is greatly reduced. It’s been two years and she struggles each day to get past the grief. Now her counselor has given her an assignment… join a grief support group. Find something to do with her life. The second is perhaps a bit easier than the former. She’s always been intrigued with bartending so a class in the subject is quickly placed on the agenda. The support group, though… that takes courage. Courage she isn’t sure she has. Then she attends her first meeting and she’s intrigued by a fellow member, a rough dressed, tattooed biker named Snake. He’s everything her husband wasn’t. Perhaps that is the very thing that draws her to him. Then there is the fact that he’s suffered as well. And no matter his outward appearance he is compassionate and there for her when she needs him most.
Snake has been down the trail of grief. He knows intimately the hell of memories and holidays. His club has been his saving grace offering home, hearth, and brotherhood. But they can’t quell the grief when the holidays hit. When he sees the requisite local scuz bucket attempting to approach the vulnerable Estelle at the support group meeting, he steps into the breach and offers to be her support buddy. They exchange numbers and he rides away… maybe to never be seen again. Then one night he receives a call from a tearful Estelle. She’s suffering and he’s been there. What may have been a superficial offer in the beginning soon becomes a deep and abiding friendship as these two offer each other love and understanding in their shared grief. But unlike Estelle, Snake’s loss stems from the violence of a hate crime and vengeance burns in him.
He’d been a sheep before his life with the Wild Ones—quiet, docile, and ready to go with the flow in most things. Now he was a beast who stood up for what he believed and took when others would never give. The world was a dark pace. The strong survived and thrived. The weak were overrun. He’d never be the one on the bottom again.
Broken But Breathing isn’t all about processing the grief. It’s about moving beyond the grief. Finding closure. Learning to live again. Finding love. Finding passion. And so much more… but to say more would be to spoil the ride. This is one of those stories that you just can’t put down. It opens you up and makes you vulnerable and maybe it offers a bit of validation and healing as well.
