The Torches We Carry By L.A. Witt
Genre: Contemporary Romance, GLBTQ, MM
Released: April 30, 2018
Publisher: Self-Published

It’s been six years since Marcus Peterson and Reuben Kelly broke up, but they’ve made it work as friends and coworkers. That is until a few too many drinks at the company Christmas party leads to a night they both regret.
Eight awkward weeks later, when their boss—Reuben’s dad—needs someone to fill in at a trade show, Marcus and Reuben find themselves in close confines. A road trip, a booth, a hotel room… and that’s before the weather goes south.
There’s no escape from each other, and there’s no ignoring the guilt, the awkwardness… and the spark that desperately wants to come back to life. Because if there’s one thing that hasn’t changed after all this time, it’s how they feel about each other.
But if they can’t cut through all the barriers keeping them apart, this old flame will go out for good.
This gay romance is approximately 44,000 words.

This is a great second chance story.
I love a good second chance story and The Torches We Carry is a great one that also includes forced proximity. Marcus and Reuben work together at the company Reuben’s father owns. The were secret lovers but they broke up – partly because Reuben wasn’t out as being bi-sexual and partly because Reuben was afraid that one or both of them would get fired.
This story picks up six years later when we find Reuben and his wife divorcing and Reuben and Marcus forced to attend a convention together and share a room. We know that something happened recently between the two of them but we don’t know what (and I’m not telling).
The Torches We Carry touched on all of my emotions. Reuben is an introvert who finds it difficult to talk about his feelings. Marcus is a people person and when they were together he helped draw Reuben out. I really felt for both of these guys. Neither one realizes that the other is still carrying a torch for the other. When they are forced to spend a week together feelings come to the surface and they must confront things that neither one of them really want to confront.
The story was a quick read for me. The chapters are told in first person POV, alternating between Reuben and Marcus. The words flowed smoothly for me and I enjoyed the story very much. I also loved the epilogue set 2 years later. I love it when an author gives us a glimpse into the future lives of the characters so that we can see how they are getting along.

L.A. Witt is an abnormal M/M romance writer who has finally been released from the purgatorial corn maze of Omaha, Nebraska, and now spends her time on the southwestern coast of Spain. In between wondering how she didn’t lose her mind in Omaha, she explores the country with her husband, several clairvoyant hamsters, and an ever-growing herd of rabid plot bunnies. She also has substantially more time on her hands these days, as she has recruited a small army of mercenaries to search South America for her nemesis, romance author Lauren Gallagher, but don’t tell Lauren. And definitely don’t tell Lori A. Witt or Ann Gallagher. Neither of those twits can keep their mouths shut…
