This was a new reading experience for me.
Would it Be Okay to Love You? (WIBOTLY) is the first book I’ve read by Amy Tasukada and the first story I’ve ever read set in Japan with all Japanese characters. The series is engaging and I really enjoyed reading it.
Sato and Aoi bump into each other when Aoi is doing an in-store event where Sato is shopping for the robot model kits he loves so much. Aoi is a voice actor who acts in gay drama CDs that the fans just can’t seem to get enough of.
There are a lot of new-to-me terms in the book but nothing that I couldn’t understand from the context of the words. Sato is a “salaryman” – an accountant who works in an office. No one in his office knows that he is gay and neither do his parents but he’s told his sister and she is very supportive.
Aoi was put out on the street after a gay magazine was found in his room; he was only sixteen. He’s been struggling to make his own way but is finally finding some success with his voice acting. He’s afraid to let anyone get too close to him.
While the story has a lot of inuendo, mostly because of the voice work that Aoi does, I’d still consider this more of a slow-burn romance. Aoi has sworn of dating but he’s decided he can be friends with Sato so they begin spending time together.
Aoi loves to cook and Sato loves to eat so Aoi cooks for him a lot. I didn’t really know any of the exotic sounding dishes he cooked but that didn’t matter to my enjoyment of the story. The two of them had pizza a few times and Sato loves my favorite kind of pizza (just plain cheese) but Aoi likes his cheese pizza with honey – something I’ve never heard of before.
This really was a fun collection for me to read and I’m looking forward to reading WIBOTLY: Year Two next.
